Grammar Time: Mixed Conditionals

Mixed conditionalscombine two different types of conditional patterns.

Exam in Mind Level B1 / B2

Unreal conditionals (type 2 + Three) sometimes can exist mixed, that is, the fourth dimension of the if clause is unlike from the one of the main clause.

Past Condition / Present Consequence

  • If I had taken an aspirin, I wouldn't accept a headache now.

  • If Ihad slept longer, Iwouldn't be tired now.

Annotation that we can as well convey the same idea of past effect and present upshot by using type 3 conditional (if + past perfect, would've + by participle) in both clauses.Note that nosotros use this type of conditional when we regret past action or inaction.

Task 2. Rephrase the sentences using mixed conditionals.

Example: You didn't stop your work on time because you are a procrastinator. – If I weren't such a procrastinator, I would have finished my work on time.

  1. You were belatedly for a kicking-off meeting. Now, yous don't know the details of the projection.
  2. Y'all should be participating in a business organisation coming together now, but you are not. Your taxi didn't come on fourth dimension.
  3. You are a really good worker. You lot got promoted.
  4. You lot don't know High german well enough. You didn't become a new job because the visitor language is German language.
