Hot Take: Just enlarge the camera bump and turn the smartphone into a handycam already… - Yanko Design

This piece isn't really about the camera in the article, but is rather a indicate I'1000 trying to make through this photographic camera concept that popped upward while I was searching the internet for content. Just to satisfy your ain curiosity, this is the Girls Night Out camera, created by Youmeus Design as a commissioned piece of work for Lumix in 2011, when the smartphones were thicc plenty to not have those godawful photographic camera bulges.

Fast-forward to today, present-solar day-2019. Phones are getting thinner, only cameras larger. The issue, an cruddy hump on the acme of almost every smartphone you come across today. The hump'due south merely actual credit is that it clicks some remarkable pictures… information technology is, otherwise, a visual and physical weak-point in smartphone design. Only camera bulges aren't going anywhere, are they, so what'due south really stopping us from calculation a few more millimeters to them and turning them into total-blown photography tools with big lenses, large sensors, and the ability to be physically great cameras, rather than being computationally great ones?

The concept beneath is literally a handycam from 2011, just if yous take a second to look at the second-final paradigm, it almost feels similar a smartphone with one of those Pictar Pro or Moment-manner accessories. So here's my hot take… why not only make a bump that isn't as well big (anything less than half an inch is corking), and add the lens on the edge of the phone, like a handycam. Have yourself a swiveling screen for easy filming purposes and you lot've got yourself a phone that is absolutely thick, but would ostensibly have the near amazing camera on it. The entire crash-land could be utilized to add together a hefty stabilization unit, and the fact that you've got the lens on an edge, rather than a surface, ways y'all can literally turn that cylindrical bump into a lens with incredible telephoto capabilities. Not to mention a thicker phone would too allow you to have a thicker battery. Not maxim the format would be a sureshot crowd-favorite, just hey, anything's better than those ridiculous flexible brandish phones, am I right? I hateful, if you're going to add millimeters to a smartphone, at least give information technology a great photographic camera!
